Just a few weeks ago, my
childhood best friend was accepted into her dream school, the world renowned university, Harvard. From the shabby picture of the school’s logo hanging on
her wall to the official acceptance letter in her mailbox… it was a constant
battle of faith for her flickering dream. On New Years Eve of 2013, she humbly gave
her testimony of praise to God, ending with these inspiring words,
“Even when we have given up on ourselves and our dreams, God
never gives up on us. Even when He seems far away, He is always present,
lovingly waiting to pick us up. If there’s anything I’ve learnt from this
experience, it’s that God always listens to prayers and that His grace is
always sufficient for us. It’s more than enough. And so don’t worry so much
about how you’re going to get there, seek Him first, remain in Him as He
remains in you. ‘If you bring your ‘not enough’ into the hands of a God who is
‘more than enough’, he will do such a miracle."
In the book of Joshua, I read about promises of God, passed
down from generation to generation, but fulfilled at the right time. “Defeated”,
“conquered”, “victory” were repeated over and over again, with the consistent
reassurance of “Do not be afraid, for I have given you victory”.
So often I am filled with doubt and discouragement, losing sight of the "promised land". Promises that God had given me had become but shadows of doubt wavering in fear of “what if’s” and “why not’s”. Oh, I of little faith! I soon realized that Grumbling and Doubting are strongholds that traps its victims in the wilderness, blinding them from the reward!
Another thing I learnt from my friend’s
testimony of her university acceptance, is that nothing comes without perseverance. She kept her focus on
the end game. Joshua made sure to obey all the commands and instructions of
Moses, serving God with all his heart. He was in constant battle, and he fought in faith, and did things that
probably seemed silly at first, like walking around Jericho (Joshua 6), or asking for the
sun and moon to stay in place (Joshua 10:12-14). But he obeyed God without question, and the Lord fought for Israel, and brought them
to victory. “Each one of you will put to flight a thousand of the enemy, for the Lord your God fights for you, just as he promised”. [Joshua 23:10]
Their inheritance was allocated as promised. “Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the Lord your God has come true. Not a single one has failed!” [Joshua 23:14]
Remember and record the promises and dreams that God gives
you, and you will see the work of His hands! Just keep obeying Him and
listening to His word! Being courageous is staring at doubt and blatant
obstacles in the face and saying, “my God has already given me victory”. We all
have a promised land, so be strong and courageous in your faith and obedience, running
steadfast to receive your inheritance!
